Bharathiya Janathasangha to Bharathiya Janatha Party in Udupi 1953- 1976(till the end of Emergency)

After Independence, In 1953 Jana Sangha was emerged in Udupi under the leadership of many as Sri Gopalakrishna Prabhu, Sri Karamballi Sanjeeva Shetty, Sri Ananthakrishna, Sri T Vasudeva Shenoy, Sri Jeppu Lakshman Pai and Sri M Vittal Kini (Who is now in Mangalore), general secretary of the Udupi District Jana Sangha Party. Since its inception with charismatic leadership of various prominent personalities it had grassroots foundation in Udupi over the period. Sri Bolara Raghuram Shetty became the MLA in 1964 from Karkala Constituency which has to be noted as a Big Victory for Bharathiya Jana Sangha Party.
After that there was no set back to Jana Sangha, had a revolution in Udupi for the significant development, Dr.V.S. Acharya joined the Jana Sangha and made a significant contribution towards to have a molds on every corner and adjoining areas in Udupi.
Dr.V.S Acharya became the 1st Municipal President in 1968 which has 11 members elected from Bharathiya Jana Sangha and 2 more independents were among the victorious who were supported by Janasangha. This was the first ever victory of the Jana Sangh in an urban municipality in South India like Delhi Municipal Council in the Northern States. The BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani later remarked that the Jana Sangh victory in the Udupi municipal council in 1968 laid foundation for the BJP rule in South India and particularly in the state of Karnataka. As the youngest municipal president of Udupi, he was hailed for his pro-active role in the development of the town. He remained municipal president for a period of 8years (1968-72, 1972-76) and team contribution towards the Udupi in building the infrastructure like the Swarna River Dam, Treated water supply system, development of mud roads to Taar Roads. Municipal Office has own building for Nagarsabha which were prominent milestones and achievements as History.Under his presidency Udupi Municipality in 1968 became first in nation to ban carrying night soil by humans. The 1st Councilor elected is T Devadas Pai in the year 1964 to be noted.

The Jana Sangha and after that BJP was ruled Udupi Municpial council till 2013 towards betterments and contributions for make the city as renowned name in India for it modern Udupi. Muncipal Presidents of the Council are Dr.V.S Acharya, U Mohandas, A Padmanabha Nayak, M Somashekar Bhat, Gujjadi Prabhakar Nayak, Chittaranjan Hegde, Shantha Nayak, Dinakar Shetty Herga, Kiran Kumar. Vice Presidents are B Raghuram Shetty, S Vittal Shettigar, Sudhakar Shetty, Shantha Nayak, Indira Shekar, Kiran Kumar, Bharathi Chandrashekar.
During the Emergency (1975–77), V S Acharya and 5 others Gujjadi Narasimha Nayak, Sri K Ramdas Shenoy, M Haridas Pai, Ammunje Lakshmikanth Nayak & Sri M Somashekar Bhat have been arrested under MISA for a period of 19 months in jail. After being released, Mr. V S Acharya unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from Udupi in 1977 and 1980. He was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1983 and was the floor leader of the BJP Legislature party. He was as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1996 (till his death).
In the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government he was Cabinet minister for Medical Education with additional charge of Animal Husbandry.Following the historic victory of the BJP in Karnataka in the 2008 state assembly elections, he was appointed as the Home minister in the Yeddyurappa  government. He was considered as the second most important leader of the government after the Chief Minister and was also the Leader of the House in the legislative council.
Acharya was one of the most senior leaders of the BJP in Karnataka and as such, played an important role in the growth of the party in the state. He was president of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Jana Sangha (1974–77), Janata Party (1977–80) and BJP (1980–83). Also, he played a major role in the formation of the Udupi district in 1998. Known for his honesty, simplicity, dedication, wit and hard work, the soft-spoken Acharya was widely respected in the BJP and across party lines. Dr.V.S Acharya was the District President in the year 1966 and M Somashekar Bhat was the General Secretary worked together with him since as a friend, philosopher & guide throughout his carrier in building of the party in Udupi District which is to be noted. M Somashekar Bhat is a senior worker of the party & working as permanent invitee of the Udupi District BJP. Dr. Acharya was a loyal worker of the RSS, he remained, committed to the ideology and discipline of the organization and inspired thousands of BJP workers and leaders.
